Working with developer First Wind, Stantec directed the complex environmental assessment and permitting process for this first phase of the Stetson project, which involved installing 38 General Electric, 1.5-megawatt turbines along a ridgeline near Danforth in northern Washington County. The turbines can produce up to 57 megawatts of electricity, which will be augmented by up to 25.5 megawatts from a proposed adjacent First Wind project. Stantec also prepared the application for that project, Stetson II, submitted to Maine’s Land Use Regulation Commission in November. When all phases are complete, the Stetson facility will produce over 167 million kWh of electricity annually, or enough to power about 23,500 homes per year. “We’ve been pleased and excited to help First Wind complete this landmark project,” says George Kendrick, manager of Stantec’s North American wind services program. “This is important work for us, for Maine, and for the region’s economy.” Stantec has now completed work on over a hundred wind power projects across North America, including most of the wind projects in the Northeast such as the Stetson, Cape Wind, Mars Hill, Lempster, Rollins, and Record Hill wind farms. The project was cited for a host of low impact development strategies devised by Stantec for our client Carma Colorado. Stantec participated as a development team consultant for the design of grading, roadways, drainage, and utilities for this community. Located in Aurora, Colorado, Tallyn's Reach is planned to contain more than 2,000 residences, two elementary schools, community service facilities, and neighborhood commercial and retail development. The project required federal flood plain re-mapping, wetlands impact analysis, and US Army Corps of Engineers 404 permitting. Our team's work also included steep slope and tree preservation analysis, design of regional water quality/detention facilities, several miles of arterial roadways, and major water and sanitary sewer pipelines. We also provided a full range of survey services. Among the project's sustainable features are: - Preservation of the vast majority of indigenous Ponderosa Pine trees, some of which are more than 200 years old. More than 99 percent of existing trees were preserved.
- Innovative grading techniques to take advantage of surface drainage patterns, creating a natural stormwater system.
- Use of native grasses and plantings throughout the project, coupled with drip irrigation systems for critical areas, leading to significant water savings for the community.
According to a feature article on the project in Sustainable Land Development magazine, "Tallyn's Reach was envisioned to be a development that would tread lightly on the land and would not sacrifice the natural environment for the sake of short-term profits, while holding the potential to be quite profitable. It embraces low-impact development and sustainable principles while providing residents with a truly unique living experience." | | System Account | System Account | | 43 | | 2/4/2009 | Ben Phillips, a civil engineer in Stantec's Lexington, Kentucky office, has been selected as one of five 2008 Young Professionals of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Stantec has installed five of its own acoustic bat detectors on Grandpa’s Knob in Castleton, Vermont, which detect and log bats that pass by each unit. Staff are now monitoring those units every two weeks and downloading the data for analysis. The intent is to compare this data with similar information Stantec began collecting in 2007, before white-nose syndrome had been detected in the state. Stantec conducted two full seasons of bat surveys for a proposed wind farm in the area, amassing the largest bat acoustic data set collected to-date in Vermont. Stantec, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources saw the store of pre-disease data as a perfect foundation for continuing research into what acoustic bat surveys may reveal about the effects of the disease on bat populations. The 2007 data will be compared to that collected in 2008 when the disease was emerging and in 2009, when a number of major die-offs have since been reported. “When the agencies asked us if we’d be interested in partnering with them in this effort, we unequivocally said yes and volunteered the continued use of our equipment,” says Gino Giumarro, a wildlife biologist with Stantec and leader of the research effort. “The spread of wind power development has contributed to the overall knowledge that we have of bats’ natural history, so we should be able to apply those same unbiased scientific survey techniques and data to help better understand white-nose syndrome.” White-nose syndrome was first detected in 2006 in eastern New York and has since spread throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The disease gets its name from the appearance of a white fungus on the noses and wings of affected bats. Researchers still do not know what causes the fungus or why the disease has spread and killed so many bats so quickly. Scott Darling, a Wildlife Biologist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, says “Stantec’s participation in this research effort will provide some of the most valuable data to monitor the effects of white-nose syndrome on bat populations in Vermont. This critical research could not have been conducted without their assistance.” The team will continue collecting data through August 2009 and hope to publish preliminary findings by the end of the year. The effort is funded by Region 5 of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, who is leading the effort on managing white-nose syndrome research. Stantec is One Team providing Infinite Solutions | | System Account | System Account | | 57 | | 8/10/2009 | Project will be the first to track bat and bird movements in Gulf of Maine TOPSHAM ME - TSX, NYSE: STN Environmental consulting and engineering firm Stantec has announced its plans to launch a significant pilot study focused on evaluating bat and bird movements off the coast of Maine. The project, the first phase of which will run from late July through October this year, will collect data on migration patterns of bats and birds in the Gulf of Maine and represents the first such study of its kind on the Atlantic coast. It is designed to help provide baseline data for the planning of offshore wind projects in the region and is expected to form the basis for future research in other offshore areas. Maine’s Ocean Energy Task Force, established by Governor Baldacci, is currently evaluating potential wind energy demonstration sites in Maine coastal waters. The study was prompted in part by Stantec’s recent work for the Cape Wind project off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Stantec conducted evaluations of avian impacts for the Minerals Management Service’s Environmental Impact Statement for that project, which included an analysis of risks to two endangered bird species. During the course of that research, Stantec’s wildlife biologists noted a scarcity of data on regional offshore migration patterns for birds and nearly no information regarding bats in the offshore environment. “We’ve collected this kind of data for more than 100 onshore wind farms and know how valuable it is in determining the viability of a wind power site,” says Steve Pelletier, a principal scientist at Stantec. “With such little information out there on offshore bat and bird movement, we felt we could apply our experience to help fill that void, while at the same time conduct tests on equipment and methods for our future surveys.” Over the next several months Stantec will operate a number of radar units and arrays of digital acoustic bat detector systems at select sites located 6 to 20 miles off of the coast of Maine, covering a transect of nearly 150 miles from Casco Bay north to Machias Seal Island. Stantec scientists will be monitoring the data for information on the offshore presence or absence, timing, flight heights, and passage rates of bats and birds moving south during the late summer and fall migration season. These findings will be compared to similar data collected onshore. Combined, these efforts represent the first substantive attempt to collect such migration data in the Gulf of Maine and help develop a regional picture. Stantec is collaborating with a number of agencies on the study, including the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, US Coast Guard, College of the Atlantic, and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. The firm hopes to release initial results of the study by the end of 2009. Stantec has now completed work on over a hundred wind power projects across North America. The firm works on all aspects of onshore and offshore wind project planning and design, from environmental assessments, permitting, and feasibility studies to site engineering, electrical distribution, and construction management. The master plan for RiverWalk, a four-kilometer promenade in Calgary, Alberta’s East Village, got the nod from judges in the category of Urban Design Plans. The award will be presented at the Design Exchange Conference in Toronto, Ontario on October 12, 2010. RiverWalk is a key component of an ambitious revitalization effort for the Rivers District in downtown Calgary being undertaken by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation. Stantec’s design collaboration for the RiverWalk Master Plan describes a new vision for the Bow and Elbow Rivers waterfront and a new generation of public life and urban spaces in downtown Calgary. It establishes a continuous promenade that will connect a number of the city’s premier attractions, and business and residential communities, while laying out plans for waterfront plazas, gateways and community connectors, opportunities for public art and cultural expression, riparian restoration and a commuter route for both “heels” and “wheels”. The RiverWalk is intended to serve as a significant catalyst for a major redevelopment in the city’s blighted east end district. “I’m just thrilled to congratulate the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and our team on this honor,” says Cathy Sears, CSLA, ASLA, project principal and leader of the firm’s landscape architecture practice. “We believe the RiverWalk will be a source of enjoyment and excitement for Calgarians for generations to come and we’re proud to have helped bring the vision to fruition.” Stantec provided integrated services from a diverse team of landscape architects, architects, public engagement consultants, structural and electrical engineers, horticulturalists, and lighting designers. Designed by North American firm Stantec Architecture Ltd, in association with PCP Architects, this major new International Airport Terminal is on track to be Canada’s first LEED-certified airport. During her visit, the Queen sealed a time capsule, designed by Stantec architects, that will be permanently installed in the building. To be opened 50 years from now, the time capsule contains a commemorative scroll signed by the Queen at the opening ceremony on July 3rd, as well as a miniature rose within a hand-carved wooden box, given as a gift from the Queen to the province. Stantec’s design of the time capsule vessel itself was inspired by the ceremonial Royal Mace, and the dramatic curves of the roof of the new terminal. Custom-made curved glass fins surround the narrow glass cylinder that houses a gold-plated container with the scroll, while the upper glass cylinder containing the gift in its wooden box is engraved with the Manitoba crest. The airport redevelopment is one of the most significant capital projects ever undertaken in Manitoba. Designed to resemble the wings of an airplane, the building’s roof projections cantilever outwards up to 14 meters beyond its walls and into the prairie horizon and sky. The terminal’s many energy-saving features include water reducing fixtures, innovative ventilation and lighting to minimize energy needs, and a radiant in-floor heating and cooling system. In addition, more than 15 per cent of construction materials used in the terminal contained recycled content. “Through functionality, sustainability and aesthetics, the project team has aimed to design an iconic building to create a strong positive impression for residents and visitors alike,” says Stanis Smith, Stantec Sr. Vice President and Executive Principal for the project. “We are honoured to have been asked to design the time capsule that the Queen sealed when she visited." “Stantec has been an important partner in developing the facility that will be the new “front doors” to our community,” said Barry Rempel, President & CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. “Airport site redevelopment is already surpassing our expectations in serving as a catalyst for further regional development.” Stantec is one of the world's premiere airport design firms. One out of three passengers travelling in North America today goes through an airport for which Stantec has completed a major project.
