Stantec provided architectural and structural engineering services, creating a design that reflects the forward-looking aspirations of the community while respecting established traditions.
Intended as a visual metaphor of tree-like structures comprised of outstretched "branches" to support a series of thin, shell-like concrete canopies, the station provides platform coverage with generously sized shelters. Each canopy section is also naturally lit through louvered "clerestories" and further enhanced by indirect lighting.
For all of its unique character, its modular appearance strives to respect the modest scale and rhythm of the nearby residential neighbourhoods. The station design is further enhanced with extensive site landscaping—an extension of the community greenbelt. The materials palette of the station will be highly durable and maintenance-free.The Shawnessy LRT Station has received numerous awards for its compelling structure and innovative materials, and has garnered international recognition.
