Scholarships in the neighborhood

Donations towards scholarships for students in low-income and at-risk households

We put people first—it’s one of our values, and it’s something that The Neighborhood Academy and four other independent schools in Philadelphia share. For them it meant tuition assistance and the opportunity to supply a better education for their students.

The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program provides tax credits to eligible businesses (us) after they contribute to an Opportunity Scholarship Organization (the schools). The donations go toward scholarships for students in low-income and at-risk households.

The students that receive these scholarships are leaving low performing schools—schools in the bottom 15% of Pennsylvania’s System of School Assessment scores. The students arrive heavily deficient in reading and mathematics skills—and that’s where the focus goes.

At The Neighborhood Academy, the curriculum delivers college preparation focused on reading, writing, mathematics, and science skills while also developing students’ critical thinking and ethical reflection.

And the results? The class of 2016 achieved a 100% college acceptance rate, and to date, 85% of The Neighborhood Academy’s students have graduated from college or are currently enrolled. 98% of their alumni are employed—in fields including finance, social services, and pharmaceutical research.

Recently, the school used a portion of the funding to fully finance a hands-on civics class lesson. Students went to their state capitol and held a protest against a budget impasse.

Funding also assists with meals and snacks every day, transportation to and from school, and counseling for students and families. Career development and financial literacy programs work alongside a mandatory six-week summer school to prepare students for life after graduation, and continued support for alumni throughout their college years and beyond helps students succeed.

This round of scholarships, awarded in December 2014, went to The Neighborhood Academy, the Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia, Community Partnership School, Woodlynde School, and the Poise Foundation.
