Keeping a Community Connected

When the floodwaters travelled across Southern Alberta, the force exposed a utilities conduit buried under the Bow River. The lines of communication for an entire neighborhood and local emergency services were in jeopardy. Making the situation worse, the banks of the Bow River collapsed 20 metres inland, and a manhole containing the utility conduit was on the brink of failure. An abandoned manhole had already succumbed to the rushing water, and Telus Communications knew if they didn’t act fast, communication for the community might be cut.

Telus called Stantec’s water group to find a solution. Juan Morales led our team to conduct an immediate assessment of the site and make recommendations for temporary protection of the manhole. Due to the urgency of the situation, Telus asked our team to coordinate the emergency build.

The team worked quickly to bring a local civil contractor on board, conduct a series of environmental assessments and approval processes to comply with government regulations, and secure the manhole temporarily.

Now the team is working with Telus to remove and relocate the conduit to keep the lines of communication open for the community in good times and bad.
