Stantec’s Simon O’Byrne wants to ignite the Waterloo brand at CityAge: The Innovation City. The conference will be held at CIGI in Waterloo and The Tannery in Kitchener on October 9 and 10.
While many people worry that the woes of Waterloo’s Blackberry will have a negative impact on the region, O’Byrne argues that it is a dynamic core and engaged inhabitants – not any one corporation – that make a city great.
“The brand of a city is defined by its core,” says O’Byrne, a registered professional urban planner and designer. “That is, as goes its core, so goes the city, and the region with it. The ultimate measure of a successful core is vibrancy. At Innovation City, I’ll be sharing how a city gets vibrancy, dramatically enhances it, and then sustains it.” Based in Edmonton, O’Byrne is Stantec’s Vice President of Urban Planning.
Simon O’Byrne will join hundreds of city builders from across North America who are gathering in Waterloo Region for a two-day discussion on the partnerships that will shape the innovation economy in our urban age.
Also at CityAge from Stantec is Krista Walkey, a senior planner based in Stantec’s downtown Kitchener office. Walkey will explore the topic of urban “place-making” on a panel called City Magnets: Attracting – and retaining – people, businesses and capital through place-making.
Past CityAge events have taken place and are being planned in Vancouver, New York, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Seattle, London, England, Toronto and Ottawa.
