The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Stantec, has picked up the Hospital Building Award at this year’s Healthcare Business Awards. The event was held at Grange St Paul’s on 29 November and recognises excellence in the provision of NHS facilities.
Catherine Zeliotis, Stantec Healthcare Leader and Clinical Design Lead for the project, collected the award. She says: “It is wonderful to be recognised for all the great ideas that came from patients, staff and the design team and helped to create the unique community that is Guy’s Cancer Centre.”
The £160 million cancer centre, which opened on Monday 26 September, has been designed around the needs of patients and staff with an aim to unify world-class cancer treatments and research in an uplifting, non-institutional and clinically efficient healthcare setting.
To create a welcoming, human-scale patient and staff experience, the 14 storey building is arranged in four stacked villages – welcome, radiotherapy, outpatients and chemotherapy – each with its own distinct identity relating to a particular patient need. Six linear accelerators are the first radiotherapy machines in Europe to treat patients above ground level, which aims to help patients feel more comfortable in natural light and air.
Carlos Crespo-Bonilla, Stantec’s site architect for the project, says: “It is extremely rewarding to see Guy’s Cancer Centre fully operational and welcoming patients in. It was a long journey to get to this point but one which I have thoroughly enjoyed.”
