The experiential retail stores of indoor skydiving innovator iFLY were recently honored with a Commendation Award for Retail Design Store by the International Council of Shopping Centers. The award was presented at the RetailGreen and CenterBuild Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in early December as iFLY continues its growth toward an envisioned 800 wind tunnels around the world. The projects are designed by Stantec and implemented by Hodges & Associates Architecture.
The ICSC U.S. Design and Development Awards recognize excellence in innovation and creativity in the U.S. retail real estate industry, with a focus on new developments, renovation and expansion, and retail store design.
CarloMaria Ciampoli, Stantec senior designer for the iFLY project, and Larry Weeks, senior associate, gave a presentation about the unique facilities at the conference. “It’s wonderful to have these facilities recognized for providing such a unique experience,” Ciampoli said. “In a time of online retail where people can order almost anything from their living room, our goal is to create spaces that inspire people to get out, gather, and feel connected to one another and their community.”
The iFLY facilities include more than 35 indoor skydiving tunnels around the world. The facility designs include an exterior that is an interesting shape and has softly curved lines and a sophisticated color palette that creates a strong invitation to visitors. Inside, the building feels more like a social hub than an amusement ride. They are places for the indoor skydiving community to gather and come back to again and again.
The iFLY experience takes place in a high-tech wind tunnel located within a glass cylinder. The building’s organization makes the flight chamber the focus of a visitor’s experience. The building’s walls are designed to echo the shape of the flight chamber—without corners, just like the sky.
