Stantec receives five national engineering excellence awards

Infrastructure and environmental projects in four states honored

Global design firm Stantec has received five awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies(ACEC). ACEC’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA), sometimes called the “academy awards of engineering” were presented on April 27, 2017 in Washington DC. Stantec received two honor awards and three national recognitions for engineering projects in four states.

Columbus, Ohio’s Scioto Greenways received an honor award. This high-profile project restored 7,000 linear feet of the Scioto River and created 33 acres of new green space in downtown Columbus. The Stantec team’s involvement included designs for removing an obsolete dam, restoring the Scioto River channel and creating new waterfront recreation areas with land reclaimed from narrowed river channel. The dam removal and river restoration turned sediment-laden, slow moving waters into a healthy environment supporting a vibrant waterfront destination. This widely lauded restoration project was also recognized with a national award from American Public Works Association.

Maggie Daley Park in Chicago also won an Honor Award for Stantec and Infrastructure Engineering. This new Windy City park includes a signature quarter-mile-long ice skating ribbon that converts to a trail in warmer seasons, and two 40-foot-tall rock climbing structures that comprise Chicago’s first and only climbing park. A three-acre play garden features include a suspension bridge, slides, ship, and sensory garden for children of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

Stantec also received three National Recognition Awards for the Hatchery Creek Stream Restoration in Kentucky, Fourth and Summit Complete Streets in Columbus, Ohio, and the U.S. 17 Median Improvements project in South Carolina.

Since 1967, U.S. engineering firms have entered their most innovative projects and studies in ACEC's EEA program which honors the year's most outstanding engineering accomplishments. Projects that are winners at state level EEA competitions are eligible for ACEC's national EEA competition.
