Stantec Architecture earns two Celebration of Architecture awards from AIA Detroit

Early Childhood Learning Laboratory and Genesee Career Institute take home half of the New Building awards

Stantec Architecture received two Celebration of Architecture awards from the American Institute of Architects Detroit (AIA Detroit.) The Genesee Career Institute in Flint, Michigan, and the Early Childhood Learning Laboratory in Grand Rapids, Michigan, earned two of the four awards in the New Building category.

AIA Detroit hosts the architecture community’s annual Celebration of Architecture event to highlight and celebrate architecture luminaries and emerging creative professionals.

“We strive to imagine new possibilities with our clients and deliver excellence in every building design,” said Janice Suchan, managing leader for Stantec’s Building group in Detroit. “With nearly 60 design submissions, we could not be more honored to take home two Celebration of Architecture awards. It’s wonderful to be recognized for our work, but even more wonderful to share this recognition with two engaging and visionary clients!”

The following Stantec projects received Celebration of Architecture awards:

Early Childhood Learning Laboratory – Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) has a 40-year history of providing exemplary early childhood education, but its existing Early Childhood Learning Laboratory had outgrown its previous location. Due to an aggressive design schedule, Stantec used a series of design charrettes with GRCC to define goals, prioritize dreams, iterate options, and synthesize decisions to strength the program’s ambitions. The completed single-story building features a flexible multi-purpose room, an adjacent family reception lobby, administrative support offices, and adaptable classroom laboratories. With the addition of the Early Childhood Learning Laboratory, GRCC aims to elevate the program as a resource for educators, parents, and providers throughout the Grand Rapids Community.

Genesee Career Institute – The Genesee Intermediate School District made a commitment to give its career and technical education facility a complete upgrade. Stantec transformed the District’s former “Skills Center” into the Genesee Career Institute. The 113,000-square-foot building offers enhanced facilities, better technologies and next-gen learning spaces. A key feature is the Innovation Zone – a flexible, multi-purpose space that connects the northern and southern wings of the building while accommodating all education programs. The transformed space offers the opportunity for an array of modern career and technical education programs, including STEM, law and public safety, graphics, multimedia/communications, welding, transportation, marketing, information technology, health services, cosmetology, and hospitality.
