We analyze natural processes driving ecological functions and incorporate these processes into designs to create self-sustaining ecosystems.

George Athanasakes

Senior Principal

Louisville, Kentucky

George leads our ecosystem restoration group and is one of the driving forces behind some of the nation’s largest and most innovative stream restoration projects to date including the Elm Fork Stream Restoration, the North Platte River Restoration, and the Hatchery Creek Stream Restoration. He’s also helped to bring innovation to the field of stream restoration by leading the development of the RIVERMorph software, which is the industry standard throughout North America and internationally.

In his more than 25 years of experience, George has worked on projects throughout the United States and Canada in a wide variety of geologic settings. With his broad stream restoration experience, George is highly sought after to instruct stream restoration training workshops, present at national conferences, and author papers.

George enjoys leading teams and setting the vision for Stantec’s Ecosystem Restoration practice, which spans across the United States and Canada and includes expertise in every type of ecosystem.

Look for my article on the Hatchery Creek Stream Restoration Project, “A Unique Opportunity to Create Trout Habitat and Provide Mitigation Credits” in Land and Water Magazine in September.

For a great book on how to grow and develop teams, check out “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.

I have coached youth soccer for over five years, and I recently led a recreational team to an undefeated season and a state tournament championship.
