Transportation corridors are the lifelines of communities; my role is to maintain efficiency in movement.

Gary Powell

Principal

Chicago, Illinois

Gary takes the Metra (commuter rail) in to the office every day, reinforcing a lifelong appreciation for transportation since his boyhood fascination with trains and desire to be an engineer. Today, he’s a different kind of engineer—a structural engineer who has designed more than 100 bridges over railroads, roads and streams for clients throughout the Chicagoland area including the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Tollway, and the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Gary enjoys a challenge, and he’d say one of the most rewarding projects he’s worked on in his 30+ year career was the I-80/94 (Kingery-Borman Expressway) widening and reconstruction. His team was not only responsible for designing an expressway overpass structure, three dual mainline structures, and multiple retaining walls—they served as the supervising consultant for the corridor, working with three other consultants and coordinating among two state agencies. Gary’s most prized possession? A baseball autographed by three of the Chicago Cubs from the infamous 1969 team – two of which are now in the Hall of Fame: Ron Santo and Billy Williams.
