By recognizing the value that the client or contractor brings to the table, you develop a mutual respect for one another—that creates a foundation for compromise and leads to successful projects.

Kristen Smith

Yellowknife, Nothwest Territories

Kristen has been providing electrical engineering services in Northern Canada since 2001. Originally from Newfoundland, it was her work terms spent in Iqaluit, Nunavut, that first laid the foundation for her interest in cold-climate engineering. Kristen’s cold-regions experience includes projects in Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and the Yukon.

Early in her career, Kristen had the opportunity to work as technical production, aiding in the design of East Three Schools, also known as Inuvik Schools. At 11,700 square metres, the school is the largest all-grades school located above the Arctic Circle. During the three-year construction, Kristen acted as project engineer, responsible for construction administration and site services. The electrical design included a 500kW emergency generator, high-efficiency lighting, low-voltage lighting controls (including the use of daylighting and motion sensors), video distribution, and access control and security systems.

Today, Kristen is the electrical team lead and discipline leader of engineering for Northern Canada as well as a project manager. Strong client relationships are one of Kristen’s highest priorities, and project management helps her solidify those relationships.
