Stanis is an executive vice president with more than 30 years of experience in corporate governance and complex building design leadership. Stanis provides overall direction to the Creativity and Innovation Program at Stantec, which supports, encourages, and celebrates creative and innovative thinking within our Company. Stanis is also an acknowledged expert in the field of airport terminal design.

Stanis led the Buildings Business line for ten years, growing the group organically and through acquisition to one of the largest integrated design practices in North America. He has lent his vision and expertise to a wide variety of projects around the word, including educational, entertainment and a series of airport projects in cities that include Chicago, Edmonton, Nassau Bahamas, Santiago Chile, Toronto and Vancouver.

A clarinetist in his spare time, Stanis has produced an album of music by Rota and Brahms that you can sample or purchase on Amazon.


I spoke about US Preclearance at Passenger Terminal EXPO 2016 in Cologne, Germany—the largest and highest profile airport conference in Europe, and one of the most highly regarded airport conferences in the world.

Come to the ACI-NA World Conference & Exhibition in Montreal later this year to hear my thoughts on creating a unique and distinctive “Sense of Place” in an airport.

Globalization</b></p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="15" valign="top"><p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td valign="top"><p>The airport industry is very much a global industry now. If you're traveling from a major Canadian airport to the US, you go through US custom and immigration here in Canada. This arrangement, called Pre Clearance, has only been available between Canada and the United States, and between some Caribbean countries and the United States. With globalization of the industry, the United States is now opening this program up to the rest of the world.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="638" colspan="2" valign="top"><p><b>ON SCREEN: 2. Privatization</b></p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="15" valign="top"><p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td valign="top"><p>Many countries around the world are looking for ways that they can enhance their airport infrastructure, but they don't necessarily have the money to be able to do it. There are other drivers, such as risk transfer, and schedule transfer, but governments are looking to the private enterprise to get involved in the airport industry.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>One of the very first projects of this regard is LaGuardia, which is a project that we're involved in. It's a complete redevelopment of the central terminal at LaGuardia, and it's being done as private initiative for private public partnership, so called, P3.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="638" colspan="2" valign="top"><p><b>ON SCREEN: 3. Inter-modal Connections</b></p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="15" valign="top"><p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td valign="top"><p>What that means is airports looking at ways they can become hubs for connecting all sorts of different types of travel, transportation, so rather than just air-travel. Cologne airport, which was where the conference was, it was possible to get onto a train that took you straight to Frankfurt Airport, on a bullet train, that went three hundred kilometers an hour. Their connection between high-speed train and the airport was really seamless. I think that this is a theme that we're going to be seeing played out in airports worldwide.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="638" colspan="2" valign="top"><p><b>ON SCREEN: 4. Airport Cities</b></p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="15" valign="top"><p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td valign="top"><p>In Vancouver, I think the estimates are between thirty and forty thousand people are employed either directly or indirectly at the airport.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Airports around the world are looking at ways that they can find other uses, whether it's complementary retail services, whether it's hotels and hospitality services, whether it's office buildings, cargo facilities. All of these things, and really turn the airport into much more of a vibrant city than it has been in the past.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="638" colspan="2" valign="top"><p><b>ON SCREEN: 5. Diversification</b></p> </td> </tr><tr><td width="15" valign="top"><p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td valign="top"><p>Airports have two sources of revenue. They have the airlines, and then they have you and me, the passengers. They have realized that through developing other facilities in the airports, to improving the quality and quantity of their retail offerings, they're able to improve what are called non-aeronautical revenues, which are the revenues that they derive from the sources other than the airlines.
