Stantec-designed project celebrates critical milestone

08/19/2021 DENVER, CO TSX,NYSE:STN

Construction of Phase 2 of Denver International Airport’s Great Hall Project recently broke ground, with Stantec—a global integrated design firm—serving as lead designer. The multiphased project includes a renovation of the airport’s Jeppesen Terminal to create an airport for the future with enhanced safety and security, a more intuitive passenger flow, and increased capacity to accommodate continued growth. The primary focus of Phase 2 is to enhance security by building a new state-of-the-art checkpoint on Level 6 in the northwest area of the terminal, along with innovative passenger queueing and improved post-security circulation.

As one of the most iconic and busiest airport terminals in the world, the Jeppesen Terminal redevelopment will serve to enhance a world-class passenger experience by leveraging technology to speed the journey from curb to gate. The Great Hall project strives to humanize the process of air travel and reduce passenger stress by implementing new hybrid ticket counters at check-in, offering state-of-the-art automated screening lanes, and consolidating security checkpoints. Whether arriving or departing, the revitalized Great Hall will extend a warm welcome and create a lasting impression for passengers.

“As Denver International Airport (DEN) continues to grow, it’s thrilling to play a key part in enhancing the traveler experience in this iconic terminal,” said Josh Gould, Stantec senior vice president, based in Denver. “It’s incredibly exciting to reach this critical milestone in the transformation of one of the country’s premier airports, and we look forward to continuing the journey.”

Phase 2 is taking place concurrently with Phase 1 as crews complete work on the new ticketing areas for several major carriers at the airport. With Phase 1 slated to be complete by the end of 2021, there will also be four new restrooms and an increase of 31,000 square feet added to improve passenger flow on Levels 5 and 6. Phase 2 work is slated to be complete in mid-2024, with the new checkpoint to open by early 2024.

Stantec is providing architecture, interior design, design management, and construction administration services for the Great Hall Project. Stantec will also provide construction observation services with Hensel Phelps serving as construction manager and general contractor.
