Upgrading capacity in a sewer segment with 10 new manholes and a jack and bore section

After our team completed a sewer capacity study, we identified a need for a new sewer upgrade to address a projected shortfall on Mabel Street in Tucson, Arizona. We worked with the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (PCRWRD) to support future upstream growth.

The project is located in a heavily populated residential area and near the downtown campus of Pima Community College. Our team worked under an on-call assignment to design a 3,200 linear foot (975 metres) of 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimetres) new gravity sewer with 10 new manholes. To reduce the impact of construction on residents and traffic, we used jack and bore to install the sewer line under Stone Avenue, a major roadway. Having participated in the selection of the construction manager at risk (CMAR), our team worked closely with the contractor from 50 percent design and addressing constructability challenges. Weekly meetings provided construction coordination and responses to requests for information.

Working with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), we coordinated  multiple discharge authorization phases, reducing diversion flow systems during construction and saving on project costs. Our team successfully delivered the upgraded capacity sewer segment for PCRWRD and the surrounding community.
