Blackspring Ridge Wind Power Project

Community consulted on resource management plan to support major wind farm

Vulcan County, Alberta

How is Stantec helping Western Canada’s largest wind energy project generate 300 megawatt wind power to Alberta’s electric system? We started by consulting the communities.

While doing an environmental assessment to minimize impact on native prairie grasslands for the Blackspring Ridge Wind Project, Stantec immediately recognized the need for Aboriginal consultation. The development lease lands bordered an ancestral and traditional Aboriginal ceremonial site. Stantec worked together with a number of communities to understand traditional interests and project influences relating to the site complex. As a result of the traditional studies performed, a community-based land and resources management plan was created that supports the various interests and minimizes the impact on the land. This work represents the first traditional studies undertaken for a wind energy development in Alberta and subsequently became an integral part of Greengate’s other development projects.

Stantec provided further assistance through public consultation, project management and environmental monitoring. We continue to support the client and project lifecycle through regulatory support and permitting.
