Faced with a cramped, outdated space and increased infection control issues, Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children needed a multi-phase renovation to their emergency department.
The Stantec team undertook an intensive consultation process to understand fully the needs of the staff and families using the facility. Sensitive to these points of view, the team developed both quiet and vibrant waiting areas for teens, nursing mothers, and families with young children. The new waiting areas have interactive games and discovery boxes that children can crawl into and experience views of nature. Features like these give young patients an opportunity to take control and explore in a place where things are otherwise out of their hands.
Our designers carried the discovery box theme from the waiting area through to treatment spaces. Each exam room is a kind of discovery box, with glass doors and brightly colored privacy curtains and back walls. The team chose materials based on safety, durability, and ease of cleaning to address concerns about infection control. Just as important, they considered the physical and emotional comfort of patients, families, and staff throughout their design process.
