A pipeline lateral that moves and measures millions of litres of oil every day usually takes around two years to design and build. When Inter Pipeline Ltd (IPL) needed one in almost half that time in central Alberta, there was only one way to get there: innovation. IPL brought in Stantec to help.
To deal with the compressed schedule, the team got creative. A detailed analysis of the project timeline identified opportunities to “parallel” tasks, cutting large chunks out of a typical schedule. Schedule analysis throughout construction produced more chances to save time while dealing with unexpected disruptions like delays in equipment delivery.
To meet the deadline, construction shifts ran into the night. This, along with the project’s general fast pace, made health and safety a challenge for the team—and a point of particular pride when the work finished without incident.
Today, the Beaverhill-Lamont Blend Connection lets IPL provide capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day to Canexus, a key client. “With Stantec’s contributions, this project was completed on time and under a tight schedule,” says IPL. “Stantec consistently and quickly resolved problems as they arose.”
And, with an ultimate capacity of 320,000 barrels per day, this project will help meet IPL’s needs in the area for years to come.
