Preston Street Rehabilitation – The Heart of Ottawa’s Little Italy

Bringing a tired street back to life

Ottawa, Ontario

For over a century, Preston Street has been the heart of Ottawa’s Italian community, a gathering place for many social and commercial activities. As one of the oldest streets in Ottawa, Preston Street’s tired road, aging sewers and watermains could not support the growth of the area. This presented Stantec with the opportunity to help plan and design the much needed infrastructure improvements including the roadway, sewer, and water systems. The project team undertook a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to address the street’s problems while maximizing the opportunity to improve pedestrian facilities and amenities in a sustainable fashion.

Working closely with the city and local community representatives, we addressed the practical requirements of the street by balancing the needs of traffic with transit, cyclists, pedestrians, businesses, and residents. The rejuvenation also provided places for the street to come alive through inviting streetscapes that include gardens, tree plantings, flowerbeds, wide sidewalks, piazzas, and patios. It also included elements of art and welcoming gateway features aimed at highlighting the area’s culture.
