Remote Emergency Response, Remediation and Reclamation

Helping nature recover through committed service

Willowlake River, Northwest Territories

When an underground pipeline released of some 1,200 barrels of crude oil near the Willowlake River in the Northwest Territories, Stantec provided emergency response services, environmental site assessment, and remediation in this remote area.

Our team moved to our client’s temporary camp near the site to reduce travel costs and time. A mobile laboratory was brought to the site to reduce wait times for results and, consequently, decision making based on those results. Between May and December 2011, four to 20 Stantec specialists were on site at all times, working 10-day rotations to ensure continuation of service.

Stantec supported the oil containment and recovery program including the design and supervision of the environmental site assessment (surface water, soil, and groundwater), remediation, reclamation, and monitoring of natural attenuation programs. We also conducted air quality monitoring and sampling, assessed archaeology concerns, and monitored local wildlife.

Our reclamation and monitoring work will be completed in 2016, helping the site move forward, naturally.
