Located in south Edmonton, Southgate Centre is a preferred venue for flagship stores and exclusive retail locations. The potential for several new high-end stores, combined with increased volume from an anticipated LRT line and significant residential growth in south Edmonton, meant that Southgate Centre was ready for its next major expansion. Our client, trusting a relationship spanning more than two decades, turned to us for a solution.
The need for both increased retail space and more parking was challenging, as site space was limited by the LRT-station land allocation. Several master planning studies revealed that a second story for retail space was not ideal, so our architects concluded that if the stores could not move up, then the parking would. With an eye to aesthetics, as much as function, we installed a cross-hatch grill and lifestyle banners to screen the two new levels of parking. This saved our client significant money, as the open air parkade prevented the need for mechanical exhaust systems, while still screening the nearly 1,000 new stalls from street-view.
On the west façade a new “front door” gives the Centre a fresh, bold look with exterior elements, such as frosted glass, creating the feeling of light and open air, and lifestyle images in varying scales visually conveying the upscale ambiance of the centre.
