Providing education to all our children is vital to community growth. The Regina Early Learning Center provides just that, by giving preschool children from low income families an opportunity to learn. To strengthen this already amazing facility, we developed a large multipurpose space, designed with large playful coloured windows. This unique space allows the children to explore their artistic imagination and facilitates interactive learning. The windows on three sides connect children to the outdoors, coloured glass creates playful projections on the floor that change throughout the day and with the seasons, and an in-floor heating system allows them to comfortably explore their imagination through music, stories, and learning materials such as sand, water, paint, and clay which promote scientific awareness and a respect for nature.
We are delighted to have received two awards for this project; the 2009 Premier’s Design Award for Excellence in Architecture, as well as a 2010 Municipal Heritage Award for Sensitive Addition. The recognition was a great honour for a particularly gratifying project.
