In the future, today’s students will be at the forefront of economic, environmental, and social trends. So how can we tap into that and address global challenges? Universities. By incorporating sustainable practices throughout their organization, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is planning for the future. Our Strategic Sustainability Plan (SSP) aligns with and builds on the many TRU campus sustainability initiatives.
The SSP provided a framework to 18 thematic areas in four categories: operations and planning, advocacy and engagement, learning, and administration. We’ve outlined strategies in each of these areas and identified lead departments for implementation. The plan also broadened the focus and role of the Sustainability Office—from energy and operations to a broader mandate of campus-wide coordination and tracking of sustainability efforts in all functional areas, including academics.
To build a plan with achievable and measureable outcomes, we framed the SSP around the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ established by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. These strategies are another step toward finding solutions to the challenges we see coming.
