Many campuses are a major part of the communities within which they lie. When the University of Alberta asked us to help them plan for the future of South Campus, we quickly realized the importance of engaging the surrounding community, as it borders six distinct neighborhoods. To align the university’s plans with its neighbors’ expectations, our team extensively engaged the outside communities, in addition to campus stakeholders, throughout the planning process. Together the group arrived at a plan for South Campus that addresses common goals such as energy efficiency, water and wastewater management, storm water management, ecology and the environment, transportation, and healthy and complete communities.
Our team also completed an in-depth site analysis to assess existing conditions and determine the potential for applying a wide variety of sustainable design solutions to the South Campus plan. We drew upon our multi-disciplinary expertise to develop a final strategy that incorporates environmental consciousness while optimizing the campus’ connections to the community.
