What if a major Canadian airport could use its land to bring Europe to the surrounding community? Not by building more runways or expanding the terminal, but by bringing in an exciting new retail concept—not yet available in North America—for visitors and residents alike, just minutes from the airport.
The Vancouver International Airport Authority had been looking for ways to develop their substantial land holdings. The goal: grow a non-aeronautical stream of revenue for the Authority to enhance the airport’s competitive position in attracting airlines and passengers. They called on Stantec’s unique combination of airport development experience and retail expertise to help.
This kind of pioneering development activity isn’t without its challenges. Neighbouring municipalities voiced concerns with respect to traffic resulting from this new commercial use, and even opposed the commercial use itself, initially, prompting Stantec to amend the business model and put together alternate scenarios including the development of an entirely new site. We ultimately helped the Authority successfully navigate the development approvals process.
