With a viaduct above and vacant properties below, this major intersection (the site of Metro-North’s 125th Street Station) was hardly the kind of space that would make a great transit hub or public gathering spot. Yet, that’s what we created through our design of a public plaza enlivened with programs, food service, and meeting places.
We knew that a successful transit hub had to feel safe to visitors, and with the viaduct above, the area was dark and prone to flooding. We designed street lighting for the plaza and then integrated lighting under the viaduct itself. We also designed custom drainage basins and street bioswales to capture stormwater from the overhead structure.
The result? An open, public space with its own identity, increased pedestrian circulation, great seating, and space for events. Along with better drainage and new lighting, adding furnishings, new paving, and street trees created a place that will encourage community activity and help to grow the area’s economy.
