A two lane residential collector road in this established beach community was showing its age. The 1.5 mile corridor was prone to flooding due to its location in a low lying area and poor drainage capacity. In addition, the lack of sidewalks posed problems for pedestrians in this mixed use neighborhood, which included an elementary school.
As the lead design firm for this design-build project, Stantec provided storm sewer system design and permitting, roadway design, traffic control, signing and pavement marking, signalization, and extensive utility coordination, all within a very narrow right-of-way corridor. Improvements also included the addition of bike lanes, and a school crossing.
Phased construction using detours and advance notification for motorists allowed us to phase full road closures for several blocks at a time, reducing mobilization costs, speeding up the construction schedule and easing impacts to local travelers. The project received kudos from the public for roadway functionality and improved safety, flood abatement, and improved aesthetics. A welcome outcome – particularly in the rainy season.
