5th & Water Street Streetscape Plan

Streetscape celebrates connection to the river

Northfield, Minnesota

For those strolling along the pedestrian promenade on 5th Street in the “best little downtown in Minnesota,” one thing is evident — this picturesque community appreciates its connection to the Cannon River. Seating nodes, river overlooks, and amphitheater steps down to the river are some of the streetscape elements that provide opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the downtown area and take in the sights.

Native limestone outcroppings and riparian landscaping combine to evoke the historic natural elements of the river valley. Public art including the elegant Harvest sculpture, pedestrian level lighting, decorative paving, and interpretive kiosks add to the aesthetic experience and provide wayfinding.

Not only reconfigured to improve circulation, the Water Street parking lot incorporates LID site planning techniques while pervious pavements improve stormwater management. Planting areas were designed to infiltrate urban stormwater and enhance the livability of urban street trees. For those using alternative transportation to reduce carbon footprints, specialized structures reminiscent of the days of horse led carriages are provided for cyclists to secure their bikes.
