After completion of an Athletic Grounds Master Plan to determine the most cost-effective and programmatically-relevant location for a new synthetic turf field for intercollegiate field hockey and other multi-sport uses, our challenge was to meet the varying needs of several programs on the steeply sloped and previously undeveloped agricultural parcel near the College’s main entrance. We succeeded in meeting that challenge by artfully terracing the site to minimize slopes and maximize the size of the fields. The completed facility includes a new multi-purpose stadium field with sports lighting used primarily for competitive field hockey and women’s lacrosse, but also for competitive soccer, practice football, rugby, and numerous club and intramural programs. We also designed a new natural grass practice football field and NCAA softball stadium.
Our sensitivity to college and town politics, detailed contract drawings, and responsiveness during construction lead Director of Facilities Jim Brassord to note “Amherst College has exceedingly high expectations of our design professionals. Stantec sets the standard I wish our other design professionals could live up to!”
