When you’re growing as quickly as athenahealth, you need space—and a master plan to develop it. This leading healthcare IT provider had space in its 29-acre (12-hectare) campus at the Arsenal on the Charles in Watertown, Massachusetts. It just needed a plan to renovate the site.
Our team provided site planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and permitting services for the project. We worked with Charles Rose Architects to design a campus plan that features six new buildings, a 1,390-car parking garage, an integrated stormwater management system, and enhanced green spaces. The buildings and stormwater system support future growth while preserving the historic architecture and environment. Meanwhile, the parkade reduces surface parking, maximizing green spaces and other flexible areas for both employee and public use. “Shared streets” in the campus interior fully support pedestrians, as well as bicycles and vehicles. This will increase accessibility, and connections, on campus and between the campus and community.
With this master plan, athenahealth will have the space to expand and grow a technology and healthcare center that, when completed, will become a community resource and destination.
