The mission: improve traffic flow and reduce accidents at this busy Jacksonville intersection with limited wiggle room. The solution: deliver preliminary studies through final design for a grade separated tight urban diamond interchange.
The project was commissioned by the City of Jacksonville through their Better Jacksonville Plan, an initiative for comprehensive growth management. Under the plan, 10 critical intersections were identified for operational improvements. In fact, our team tackled what the Jacksonville Transportation Authority had listed as the worst intersection for traffic incidents in the city for several years running.
The resulting overpass design provided for three 12 foot lanes with 10 foot shoulders and traffic barriers on Atlantic Boulevard over Kernan Boulevard. Additional project activities included a significant stormwater management plan that involved use of joint use ponds, roadway and under deck lighting, signing and pavement markings, utility coordination and relocation, and landscaping.
This high profile challenge also included a detailed public involvement plan and multiple permit approvals at the federal, state, and local level.
