Protecting our water, land, and community- Stantec helped solve a major wastewater concern for the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer Department (MSD).
Too much rain and too little storage led to consistent overflows of 19 sanitary sewers in a large area of Louisville. These wet weather woes were affecting homes, businesses, and infrastructure and created the need for the MSD Buechel Basin project.
To solve the problem, we provided geotechnical investigations, analysis, and design services for three interconnected wet weather storage basins, an inlet structure, wet well, continuous deflection separation units, and three gate structures. Our work on these structures helped pave the way for construction of a facility able to collect peak flow discharges from the area with a combined storage volume of about 125 million gallons. It’s the largest basin facility of its kind for MSD and is potentially the most cost-effective storage/detention facility developed in response to EPA wet weather consent orders.
