The heavy-hearted Hamlet, the romantic Romeo + Juliet, the madness in Macbeth: the Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, Illinois, is dedicated to preserving, producing, and promoting the titular playwright’s lifetime of masterpieces. When the organization originally planned the facility, two things were clear: the theatre would be located on Navy Pier to revitalize the waterfront space for local use rather than tourism, and it would need to be accessible for students and youth.
Set within Chicago’s hottest tourist destination, the Shakespeare Theater consists of an intimate 530-seat theater that can host a range of performances. The design includes a flexible 200-seat studio theater above the main stage for smaller shows, as well as a rehearsal hall, a bookstore, support spaces, and facilities for educational workshops, seminars, and outreach programs.
We managed the multi-disciplinary engineering team and provided the architectural and interior design services necessary for a world-class theatre. Our design enables the theater to accommodate various stage and scenery configurations, and offers state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and technical support facilities.
