City of Rochester Bicycle Trails

Improving quality of life

Rochester, New York

When the City of Rochester acquired Federal Transportation Improvement Program grant funding through the Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program for the design and construction of seven neighborhood trail connections to the Genesee Riverway Trail (GRT), we were ready to meet the challenge of designing them.

Though each trail had its own unique qualities, the overall purpose of the project was to improve air quality. How? Well, better trails in a non-motorized transportation corridor promote pedestrian commuting. To encourage this, the various trail connections link adjacent neighborhoods to a multitude of employment, business, recreation, historic, and cultural destinations by closing gaps in the city-wide trail system. The project also enhances the scenic and recreational resources of the riverway.

Perhaps most significant, many of the trails connect to neighborhoods containing some of the lowest auto-ownership population centers of the region, providing essential non-motorized travel options for community access to work and to recreation.
