In 2016, Cooper University Hospital embarked on a new initiative to define program needs and verify space options for its existing facilities. As part of this mission, the Cooper team needed someone to manage this multi-phased project. That’s where our program and project management team came in. We already had a successful working relationship with the health system on previously completed capital projects, so we would serve as the owner's representative, provide concentrated project and move management efforts, and to manage the bidding process.
The project scope? To relocate Cooper's existing respiratory services, trauma support, anesthesia offices, and CSP to another location on the campus, and to expand the adjacent existing operating room (OR). This relocation and expansion required meticulous planning and project oversight because the neighboring area was a fully-functioning OR.
Our team performed an evaluation alongside Array Architects during the schematic design phase to the assess costs, and operational functionalities, of possible locations for the displaced offices. In addition to performing the evaluation, the project managers had to effectively plan the project so that the existing operating room had no disruptions to the surrounding healthcare environment.
Upon completion, the OR will be expanded to include five new rooms, including one trauma, two general, and two robotic, as well as eight new post-anesthesia care unit positions.
