Five million. That’s how many tourists and shoppers the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls (FONF) mall draws from the US and Canada every year. This expansion will introduce 50 new stores to explore and a dedicated public common space for foot-sore shoppers.
One challenge was water. When heavy rains fill an adjacent retail center’s detention facility, it’s FONF that gets flooded. We designed a stormwater mitigation system including two new retention ponds. What makes these ponds special? Involvement in the Brownfield Cleanup Program had us lining the retention ponds with onsite clay and maintaining zero discharge of stormwater from the construction site until it was capped.
The result was an improved drainage system for FONF and the adjacent land owners. The expansion helped the mall be a cleaner, safer site, and now it’s bigger with new and expanded parking lots, better ingress and egress, and it adds hundreds of construction and on-site retail jobs. The Buffalo Niagara region will be looking forward to showing FONF off to the next five million visitors.
