Fort Washington Park

Improving pedestrian connections

Manhattan, New York

We prepared a master plan and led the design of the implementation of that plan to enhance Fort Washington Park, with its dramatic cliffs, grassy meadows, and stunning views, as well as its ball fields and courts. The master plan included analysis of existing usage patterns, demographic trends, effects of the proposed development on usage, circulation patterns, constraints, opportunities, security and safety concerns, types and conditions of vegetation, erosion and drainage issues, and condition of existing facilities.

The Phase 1 design of comprehensive improvements included entrances, paths, and pedestrian bridges to improve pedestrian connections from the surrounding community to park facilities and along the shoreline to Dyckman Street.

We are also designing playgrounds and recreational facilities for baseball, tennis, soccer, and volleyball; a kayaking launch; a new comfort station and upgrades to existing comfort stations to accommodate Americans with Disabilities Act compliance; and restoration and enhancement of historic park structures. In support of this work, we are also upgrading park utilities and drainage, as well as providing landscape restoration and official vehicular access.
