Genesee Intermediate School District - Genesee Career Institute

Next-gen design strengthens career and technical education programs

Flint, Michigan

When Genesee Intermediate School District’s administration decided that its career and technical education facility needed a total makeover—in both educational programming and the facility—the challenge was to renovate the existing building while expanding the structure. Their goal? Embody the new Genesee Career Institute brand.

We responded to their challenge by providing a transformational design solution—offering the District enhanced facilities, better technologies, and next-gen learning spaces. That translates into an array of modern career and technical education programs, including STEM, law and public safety, graphics, multimedia/communications, welding, transportation, marketing, information technology, health services, cosmetology, and hospitality.

Making the project even more exciting, the design also consolidated programs that were operating within ancillary campus structures and provided a distinctive entrance and sense of place to reinforce the new institute.

Our team's solution brought it all together, providing exciting teaching and learning environments that are enhanced by the latest technology. A key feature of the new facility is the Innovation Zone, a flexible, multi-purpose space that connects the northern and southern wings of the building and accommodates all education programs, as well as public events, with a unique array of movable panels and dispersed technology. With its transparent front façade, the Innovation Zone identifies a stunning new entry for the facility and campus, and exemplifies the new Genesee Career Institute brand.
