For the Hefei Particle Therapy Center in Hefei City, a 7.5-million-person metropolis, we had to design something new—the first (in the world) in-patient cancer treatment hospital. In Chinese healthcare customs, patients are treated in the hospital, as opposed to the out-patient cancer treatment model that is common in North America. When our client wanted to lead the way in carbon center treatment, they called on our design expertise.
Designing the first in-patient cancer treatment hospital took creativity. The 250,000 square foot, three-building complex would be built in two phases: the proton cancer hospital and then the hotel and carbon center. But we still needed to ensure efficient patient and staff circulation to and within the facility while providing patient privacy.
The answer? Beds on the top floor, administration and cafeteria below that, and treatment areas on the first floor, isolating beds from public areas. We also had to navigate and comply with many regulations regarding both healthcare and radiation.
There were no models for in-patient treatment centers with heavy carbon atoms before this, but with our help, Hefei City is now the first city in China to provide this new, very powerful treatment method.
