Our team is helping a new movement get off the ground by designing buildings where people realize the dream of flying. Stantec was hired by iFLY, an indoor skydiving company, to design buildings that make people feel they are soaring through the air.
With the goal of completely immersing visitors in their flying experience, a team of Stantec architects; graphic, industrial, and interior designers; landscape and lighting specialists; structural engineers; and planners created iFLY building prototypes and then oversaw the application of the prototypes at facilities around the world. We even redesigned iFLY’s flagship site in Orlando.
The iFLY experience takes place in a high-tech wind tunnel located within a glass cylinder (designed by iFLY). We reorganized the building to make the flight chamber the focus of a visitor’s experience and designed the walls to echo the shape of the flight chamber—without corners, just like the sky. For the flagship site, which has two flight chambers, we designed a wall that can be opened to the outdoors. Our goal was to strike a balance between the technological feat that the building represents and a design that evokes the emotion felt when flying.
