Norfolk Southern’s rail network encompasses about 20,000 route miles of track in 22 states and the District of Columbia, and services every major container port in the Eastern United States.
As one of Norfolk Southern’s on-call consultants, Stantec helps keep the extensive rail network and facilities safe and operational by providing general engineering and design services under two task order contracts — one with the Design and Construction Department, and one with the Public Improvements Group within the Bridges and Structures Department.
Task order services could include trackwork/design; surveying; civil site engineering; railroad operations and route selection studies; bridges and structures engineering; geotechnical; tunnels; electrical distribution; plan and specification development; construction management; and environmental permitting assistance, planning and mitigation management.
Stantec first held this contract from 2010 to 2012. One task order assignment involved track layout design to support a sand transload facility in Streator, Illinois. Under the current contract we’ve been assigned the survey and design of a drainage system to support an intermodal facility expansion.
