Pleasure Beach Park Master Plan

Bringing protection to life

Bridgeport, Connecticut

Decades ago, Pleasure Beach Park was a popular shore-side destination and amusement park in Connecticut. But left to overgrowth and disrepair after a fire destroyed the bridge connecting the park to the City of Bridgeport, Pleasure Beach went by the wayside.

We developed a master plan for the site, featuring recreation amenities and new access to the beach for the community that has long awaited this opportunity. Our plan encourages sustainability, human and wildlife coexistence, and a generous dose of fun for visitors. By integrating utilities, security and distinctive materials, we have outlined strategies for Pleasure Beach Park’s resiliency to future storm surges and sea level rise.

The park is on its way back having hosted over 25,000 visitors in its first summer season in nearly 20 years.  Already, the plan has helped preserve and expand sensitive tidal wetlands, dunes and grassland habitat for protected and endangered species including piping plover.  For the future, the master plan envisions a park program with amenities and activities to generate revenue for long-term staffing, operations, and maintenance and, of course, the enhancement of sensitive plant and wildlife habitat that make Pleasure Beach a very special place.
