It wasn’t long ago that this former rail-yard brownfield site sat vacant. Through a collaborative effort between the City of Milwaukee, developers, design teams, and community stakeholders, this old area is transforming into a brand new park.
As one of Wisconsin’s first eco-industrial parks, our team thoughtfully designed the surrounding landscape to complement the sustainable theme of the project site. This site will be a demonstration project to showcase water-based technologies and business. We combined hard and soft design elements, creating a walkway plaza that incorporates a natural resources focus through several water features and native plantings. We also extended the Hank Aaron Bike Trail through the site, and through in-curb bioswales and rain gardens, our designers incorporated green stormwater solutions.
Reed Street Yards now features 17 acres of mixed-use development along the Menomonee River in the heart of downtown Milwaukee. Creative landscape design transformed this site from a run-of-the-mill office park to a waterfront destination—not only for businesses but also for members of the community.
