As part of an Administrative Consent Order (ACO), an odor control master plan was developed for the Town of Rockport, Massachusetts water pollution control facility. Odor sampling and atmospheric dispersion modeling were conducted to develop odor control recommendations for both the short and long term. We were able to come up with a multi-phase plan that met the ACO while also suiting the community’s budget.
Long term recommendations included the retrofit of the existing aeration tanks from mechanical aerators to diffused aeration, covering the aeration channels to contain foul odors, and ventilating the aeration tank headspace to a new 5,000 cfm in ground biofilter. The ACO was ultimately satisfied after the long term recommendations were implemented.
Currently, we are designing upgrades to the headworks facility and incorporating a new biofilter to treat odors from the headworks, replacing the existing carbon absorbers.
