What would you do if your 4th grade child still had trouble reading? For one schoolboard member in Springfield School District, that challenge grew into a vision for a stronger focus on literacy. The goal: achieve 100% literacy proficiency for every student by completion of the 4th grade.
The literacy center that we designed focuses on enhancing literacy instruction and providing spaces to support individual literacy programs.
Students and visitors are immediately immersed in learning when they enter the Literacy Center. The entry porch doubles as a covered outdoor classroom and includes a slate chalkboard. Students are encouraged to write on the slate, the sidewalk—wherever! Instead of a traditional lobby, there’s a library. We supported diverse learning styles through non-traditional elements such as a tree-house classroom, outdoor amphitheater, and green roof classroom.
This focus on immersive literacy is moving Springfield School District towards their ultimate goal—expert young readers.
