Sun Life Financial saw the economic downturn as a chance to rethink its business strategies. This included consolidating space from four buildings to three with creative solutions. Our challenge was to design space that would be flexible for an evolving, multi-generational workplace, while also maintaining department connections that were critical to the daily work flow.
Our design solution created a shift from me to we space, which encourages collaboration in a new environment. Laptops and telecommuting create less of a need for permanent workspace so we were able to minimize private offices and high workstation panels. To encourage employee interaction and collaboration, we replaced closed perimeter offices and isolated cubicles with flexible meeting and conference spaces. Workstations were designed with lower panels and glass inserts to let light permeate. We also created alternative work zones, like lounge seating and open conference tables. The result is a reimagined office with an open, lively, inviting space, flexible and adaptable to different working styles and preferences.
