The project involved reconstructing the TH 61 (Lake Street) and CSAH 2 (Broadway Avenue) intersection, as well as redevelopment efforts within the downtown area. The intersection is the primary node for the City of Forest Lake and is deeply important to its vitality. Overwhelmed from a capacity standpoint, traffic congestion was becoming problematic, and safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians were growing. The new intersection provides for a safe and functional regional corridor and downtown environment.
The intersection improvements involved constructing a multi-lane roundabout, and the downtown improvements included removing and replacing the curb and gutter, sidewalk, decorative lighting, irrigation, landscaping and streetscape improvements.
Throughout the 14 week construction period, various outreach tactics kept businesses informed of detours and customers connected to local shops. Project representatives gave roundabout construction tours to individuals who shopped downtown businesses during construction. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
