The Lits Building – Public Improvements

A facelift for a historic Philly landmark

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Built between 1859 and 1907 to house the Lit Brothers Department Store, the Lits Building has been an important part of Philadelphia for more than a century, earning its place on the National Register of Historic Places. From a small millinery shop to a major department store complex to abandonment and redevelopment as a commercial and retail space, the city-block encompassing structure is no stranger to change. The Public Improvements program ties into an overall revitalization of the downtown area.

The Brickstone Companies had an obligation to the City of Philadelphia to spend $10 million on public improvements to the site as a condition for a new digital roof sign (a previous Stantec project). They engaged our team to develop the concepts of ten components for pricing, and to lead the projects selected towards completion.

To date, we’ve completed façade lighting improvements, the replacement of public escalators, and upgrades to six public restrooms. Upcoming projects will involve streetscape improvements, a reactive digital sculpture in the atrium, and potentially, a reactive digital entrance canopy on Market Street.
