The Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology represents the University of Pennsylvania's status as a global leader in scientific research and learning, as well as its respect for the surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhood. The facility has state of the art laboratories and classrooms built around a central quad which creates a new indoor/outdoor open space for interaction. The landscape creates a delicate transition from the academic environment to the neighboring community.
To achieve this, our team of site and civil engineers overcame the challenge of designing site work, grading, utilities, and foundation drainage for the building, which is located in an area with a high groundwater table. Our design included two underground detention systems, a partial green roof, and a rainwater harvesting system. By diverting water to a collection tank prior to its entering the underground detention systems, University of Pennsylvania will be able to reuse the storm water runoff for watering the landscaping surrounding the site. These sustainable design features save resources and money.
