Thanks to the productive Bakken Shale formation, North Dakota is now a leading oil producing state – second only to Texas. The gain for the state’s economy is substantial, but this growth has come at a cost. Since 2010, truck traffic has tripled in Western North Dakota and caused increased pavement stress and capacity issues. The pavement is failing, and fatal accidents are on the rise.
Stantec is working with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) to address these pressing issues. The project has been fast-tracked by NDDOT to address the increasing traffic and fatal incidents. In McKenzie County, we are designing a pavement rehabilitation project including milling and overlay of 18 miles of heavily travelled U.S. Highway 85. To alleviate increased traffic, this rehabilitation project also includes four intersections that will be given new or lengthened turning lanes.
When this rehabilitation is complete, truckers and residents will travel with improved safety.
